FY2021 MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project

Be a Social Innovator

The Waseda Vison 150 university-wide medium- and long-term plan looks to the 150th anniversary of Waseda University’s founding in fiscal 2032. As part of this Vision, Waseda University has set the goal of developing global talent and leaders that will serve to realize the well-being of every citizen of the world. Likewise, the core of the university’s international expansion strategy is to accept 10,000 foreign students and to enable all students to study abroad. We have therefore established strategic partnerships with leading universities and institutions around the world. In addition, we have concluded partnership agreements and promoted exchange of faculty and students with Korea University since 1973, Peking University since 1982, and Nanyang Technological University since 2002, all of which are partner universities of this study abroad program.

Although the administrating faculty of this study abroad program is the School of Social Sciences, the opportunity to participate is open to all undergraduate students at Waseda University.
The School of Social Sciences offers an English language undergraduate program titled the Social Innovation Program, for which the university has established a diploma policy. Specifically, this policy states that, “In an increasingly complex global society, we will develop social innovators who are highly ambitious, who will take the initiative in identifying issues and their solutions, and who will strive to realize these solutions while involving those around them in international and local communities.”
This study abroad program will also develop social innovators with the following qualities through the experience of studying abroad at prestigious universities in Asia, and through interaction among students that supersedes the framework of the university:

  • Ability to drive structural transformation in the global order
  • Ability to contribute to the development of Asian society as a whole, and to the resolution of various issues
  • Possession of the perspective and methodology of Dialogue between Civilizations and Cultural Intelligence, both of which are program themes

Career Concept

Participating students are primarily expected to advance to leading graduate schools, including those of the partner universities, as part of careers that will enable them to play an active role in the international arena as policy makers at international organizations, as well as members of think tanks, consulting firms, and private companies, among others.
